Kiev National University of Technology and Design (KNUTD) was founded in 1930 as the Kiev Polytechnic Institute for Leather Industry. In June 1944, the Institute was named the Kiev Technological Institute of Light Industry (CTILP). In 1992, the Kiev Technological Institute of Light Industry was accredited by the highest 4th level of special training and renamed the State Academy of Light Industry of Ukraine (GALPU); later, in 1999, after re-accreditation – to the Kiev State University of Technology and Design (KSUTD), and eventually, in 2001 – to the Kiev National University of Technology and Design (KNUTD).

Today, Kiev National University of Technology and Design is an educational institution of the IV accreditation level (certificate of accreditation series RD-IV№ 1124433 dated June 5, 2013), license AE series No. 527263 dated September 9, 2014.

In total, the university has more than 9 thousand students.

International cooperation is an integral part of the activity of KNUTD. It began in 1948, when four foreign citizens were admitted to study. Since 1966, a dean of foreign citizens has been established at the university. During this time, the university has trained more than 1,700 specialists from 71 countries of the world. Now the university has 248 foreign students from 16 countries.

 The university has the following faculties:

design;
technology, service, and fashion;
mechatronics and computer technology;
chemical and biopharmaceutical technologies;
economy and business;
market, information and innovation technologies (Cherkasy);
entrepreneurship and law.
Also, the structure of KNUTD includes 3 colleges:

College KNUTD;
Lviv College of Light Industry;
Chernihiv Industrial and Economic College.
According to the “Rating of the best 200 higher educational institutions of Ukraine”, KNUTD took the 23rd place in 2015. According to the rating of Ukrainian universities “Compass” (initiated by the company “System Capital Management” (SCM) and the Foundation for Development of Ukraine “(BFRU) in the framework of the program” Modern Education “), KNUTD ranks 9th among 20 universities. The rating reflects the assessment of universities by graduates and employers in terms of compliance with the level of educational services provided by them to meet the needs of the labor market.

As of 2016, among the top 100 educational institutions, KNUTD ranks 38th in the rating of higher educational institutions of Ukraine in terms of indicators of the scientometric database Scopus.

For many years of conscientious, fruitful work, the university team was repeatedly awarded diplomas and gifts from the President of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Kiev mayor, diplomas of international and All-Ukrainian level for scientific achievements and participation in competitions and exhibitions.

In 2007, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Vladimir, for his significant contribution to the development of Ukraine, services to the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, for charitable activities, the University was awarded the diploma and the medal “Holy Prince Vladimir”.

The existence of the university for more than 80 years has made it possible to prepare many highly qualified specialists who work in all regions of Ukraine and beyond its borders. Among them are prominent state and political figures, outstanding scientists, heads of departments, enterprises, organizations, and institutions, leading Ukrainian designers and designers.
